AUSTIN, Minn. -- The Austin fire chief accused of creating a negative work environment says he plans to step down at the end of the year.

Chief Dan Wilson told KAAL-TV he has notified city administrators of his plans to retire next month. Wilson says his decision to retire is unrelated to a recent complaint about unfavorable working conditions in the department.

A complaint signed by an Austin firefighter in September alleges the unfavorable work environment. Wilson says he approached the firefighter to ask a question, but didn't do anything that would be considered hostile.

Three council members also signed a document in August requesting a meeting to discuss the fire department and an alleged poor work environment.

Wilson rose through the ranks of the fire department to become chief in the early 1990s.
